Chorus 2012, the annual Techno-Cultural Festival of Sharda University, concluded on Friday (24 Feb. 2012) with Tauheed John crowned “Mr Chorus” and Nili Shah Pokhrel “Miss Chorus”. They were chosen from a list of 14 finalists in a glittering show conducted by DJ Sumit Sethi. The fashion show was the most exciting feature of the three-day festival for which over 7,000 registrations, including 1,000 from universities and institutions from Delhi NCR and beyond, were recorded.
Held under the theme of “Global Oneness”, this was the third year of Chorus, which brought together national and international students on one platform. The Chorus also saw a number of foreign diplomats and senior company executives cheering up cultural performances and scientific innovations by the students. A blood donation camp, organized to mark the occasion, gave a human touch to the whole event.
Sharda University’s team won the Rs.15,000-prize money for the Mega Fashion Show for which contestant teams had also come from outside.
Chorus 2012 was inaugurated by Mr. P.K. Gupta, Chancellor of Sharda University, on Wednesday (22 Feb. 2012) with the traditional lighting of lamp in the sprawling campus of the university based in the Knowledge Park III area of Greater Noida. Welcoming the guests in the inaugural ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof. J.P. Gupta said that Chorus 2012 is being held as a perfect blend of technologically equipped and culturally rich youth.
The Guest of honour of the inaugural ceremony was Wajhi Farooqui, the lead singer of Raeth, the Pakistani band of “Bhula do” fame. His brief performance was highly appreciated, specially by the students in the audience. Mr. Sanjeev Srivastva, a successful entrepreneur and the Governing Council member of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India, was the chief guest.
A total of 100 competitions – 60 technical and 40 cultural – were successfully concluded. The Chorus 2012 also witnessed the exhibition of various working and non-working models made by the students. Diwakar Vaish, a student of Sharda’s Computer Science and Engineering Department, displayed a concept car having fastest acceleration greater than Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc. This project is approved by the Government of India. The concept car became the talk of the town. Other models which attracted the visitors most were a wind tunnel, F1 Camel Plane, Fokker D VIII Plane and Sterling Engine. Technical events that became the talking points were Jahaaz, Miniature Aircraft Show, Working Wind Tunnel to measure the Drag Force, Expert Manufacturing, Bob the Builder, Contraption, LAN Gaming, Break-a-break, Search-o-Mania, Setu Nirman, Junk-o-Vators, etc.
Prof. M.P. Jain, Adviser to the Chancellor and Chief Coordinator of Chorus 2012, said that the Techno-Cultural Fest was a grand success. “The beauty of the whole show was that it was totally managed by the students. They have shown tremendous organizational skills and a great sense of discipline. We are really proud of our students,” he added.
Prof. S.K. Mishra, director of RTD and coordinator of technical events, said that the scientific exhibitions, competitions and workshops left a lasting impression on the dignitaries who were invited to the fest. “They were impressed by the innovative models presented by the students of Sharda. It is also worth mentioning that technology leaders have selected Sharda University as a hub sector to recruit future talents out of B. Tech students,” he said.
According to Prof. Mishra, officials from the Associated Cement Co. (ACC) were highly impressed by the events during the prototype construction of building and bridges. Another guest from Moserbaer appreciated the exhibition put forward by the students of Sharda, he added.
The whole campus was in festive mood during all the three days with flags of 41 countries put at different locations reflecting the “Global Oneness” theme of the festival.
Mr. D. Badhie, Ambassador of Gambia, and Mr. Huang Zhigang, First Secretary in the Embassy of China, New Delhi, were among the dignitaries present at the cultural programme presented by the international students of Sharda on Friday. Besides the two diplomats, there were representatives from the embassies of Afghanistan, Iran, Yemen, Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Togo, Mangolia, Tajikistan, Kyrgystan, Turkmenistan, Madgaskar, Indonesia, Vietnam and Georgia.
A number of cultural programmes and competitions were lined up. The competitions that attracted the maximum number of entries were Mr & Miss Chorus, Mega Fashion Show, Solo and Group dances, Rowdies, Battle of Bands, DJ Night by Sumit Sethi, Nukkad Natak, Boardroom Battle, Treasure Hunt, Rangoli, etc.
